This might come as a bit of a shock, but I’m not an overnight, raging business success.
I studied creative writing in undergrad but drifted away from writing after graduation. I lived abroad, had desk jobs, a handful of unpaid internships, and even worked at a pizza parlor. But the itch to write never left me. I took a copywriting course on a whim and slowly started growing my business from there.
Emphasis on the word slowly. I don’t have some crazy success story like you all over the internet–“Got my first client in 2 weeks”, “Made $10,000 in my sleep while vacationing in the Bahamas” “Quit my job within a month of starting.”
Nope. Not even close.
In fact, I have several less glamorous stories. Clients ghosting me. Clients wanting 100 million revisions on one sentence. Clients not using my work after they said they loved it.
I’ve got lessons learned out the wazoo. But here’s the main one: Patience is a competitive edge.
Slowly over time, I’m building my own version of success. I’m attracting clients I love working with, raising my prices, and getting referrals. I’m gaining confidence in my abilities and my worth. I’m building my own version of success.
Why am I telling you this? Because it can be SO easy to hear internet success stories and think, “What the hell am I doing wrong?!”
Nothing.
You can find success as an entrepreneur. You just have to keep going, even when it doesn’t feel fun. If you do that, you will write your own success story.
To all my fellow turtles out there, you’ve got this. The hares are gonna burn themselves out, anyways!
