Alright, it’s time to get a little ranty on this lovely afternoon. Here’s one of my main pet peeves when it comes to people writing copy for or about their business (this could be on a website, in a caption, etc.):
When solopreneurs use the plural tense (we, us, our) even though they are the only employee.
i.e. “We are a brand and web design studio serving creative entrepreneurs.”
But…why?!!!
I believe people do this to try to sound more “official” and to add more weight/gravitas behind their business. But that’s not necessary! You are super weighty (you know what I mean) and there’s absolutely zero shame in being the only employee. In fact, that’s RAD. And more importantly, that’s THE TRUTH. If a client thinks they are going to be working with an entire team or agency, they’re going to be mighty confused when you are the only person they interact with. And when you confuse, you lose.
So if it’s just you running your business, PLEASE use first person (I, me, my) in all your copy.
