Have you ever heard the classic song “Turn! Turn! Turn!” by the 1960’s band The Byrds? Go ahead, give it a quick listen. I’ll wait.
The refrain goes:
“To everything (turn, turn, turn)
There is a season (turn, turn, turn)
And a time to every purpose, under heaven
A time to build up, a time to break down
A time to dance, a time to mourn
A time to cast away stones, a time to gather stones together.”
I love oldies like this! But having grown up in LA (the land of eternal sunshine), I didn’t have much experience with four distinct seasons…🤷 It wasn’t until I started my own business that the concept of seasons and their importance really stuck.
➡️ Just like in nature, there are seasons in business ⬅️
They may look a little something like this:
Winter: Business is slow. Nothing seems to be growing. Things look a little…bleak. Maybe you’re just starting out and don’t quite have your feet under you yet, or your current business seems to have simply dried up a bit. It feels like every other day you ask yourself, “Am I even doing this right?!” Instead, try asking yourself, What can I do to prepare for Spring planting? Maybe you can invest in a new skill set, network your booty off, or check things off your personal to-do list that will free you up for more work in the future.
Spring: It’s time to plant seeds! This might be a season of new connections, fresh opportunities, and renewed enthusiasm. Find inspiration around you. Build systems and processes that will serve you well come harvest time in the fall. Keep your head down and keep going.
Summer: Things are steadily growing. You’re starting to get a little scared, perhaps wondering if you really have what it takes to deliver on your promises. You’re watering your connections every day and sharpening your skills as a business owner. Things are looking up, but will they fully blossom?
Fall: It’s harvest time, baby! Those steps you took to prepare, plant, and nurture your business throughout the year? They’re paying off big time and you’re KINDA drowning but also kinda loving it. It’s time to let your true talents shine, full steam ahead.
When I made this seasonal mindset shift, I could finally breathe a sigh of relief. You mean I don’t have to run around like a chicken with my head cut off selling all the time? Or writing all the time? Maybe I can have a slow season and IT’S OKAY?! Yes, Micah. Yes. Chill out.
Next time you find yourself in a winter season, ask yourself: What can I do to prepare for spring? And when you’re crazy busy in the fall harvest, ask yourself: How can I be grateful for these seeds that have grown and blossomed?
You catch my drift. So tell me friend, what season of business or life are you in right now?
