Story time! On Friday, I opened up Instagram, expecting to do a lil scrolling, but my main feed wouldn’t load. It just kept saying “Could not refresh.” I tried all the conventional troubleshooting recommendations, but no cigar.
And guess what? It still isn’t fixed a week later! I have a support ticket in to Facebook (which owns Instagram), but no firm date as to when it will be resolved.
Why am I sharing this sob story? Because it’s a wake up call to diversify our marketing efforts. Facebook and Insta are privately owned companies. We have no control over them. We are working on rented land.
If social media is your only marketing channel, you might wake up one day and find it’s gone. Broken. Shut down. Banned. And how upsetting would that be?! All your marketing efforts would be in vain.
Personally, I have a Pinterest, a blog, website, and an email list where I share new content. And I’d like to have even more channels one day! It may feel a bit overwhelming or unfocused to fracture out your content efforts, but in reality it’s CRITICAL. Nothing could be more important.
At the very least, make sure you have a website as a home base. And hey, if you need help writing said website, I’m your gal 😉
